Centering Community in Nonprofit Programs
This past summer, I spent a few weeks in Rwanda as part of a youth empowerment leadership exchange program. The experience was a powerful reminder of the impact of stepping out from behind our screens and connecting directly with the communities we serve.
Youth, just one generation removed from genocide, joined program leaders and visiting delegates in workshops, games, dancing, coaching, and site visits to microbusinesses. Their curiosity, joy, and resilience were palpable, underscoring the importance of in-person engagement. Activities that cultivated connection, empowerment, and belonging enabled a shared sense of purpose, the bedrock of community.
Why It Matters
Communities are resilient and sustaining. They give meaning to individual stories and transform them into shared narratives. By centering community in our work, we foster belonging, joy, and empowerment; of being supported, accepted, feeling heard and seen. And this isn’t just feel-good work, it’s mission-critical. Community-driven engagement sharpens an organization’s priorities, strengthens its objectives, and amplifies its impact.
What You Can Do
Step outside. Be intentional. Here are a few ideas:
Partner locally: Connect with libraries, elected officials, places of worship, and businesses to co-host monthly workshops or events.
Offer opportunities: Create volunteer roles that draw people together while advancing your mission.
Listen and learn: Ensure every interaction prioritizes listening to the community's needs and celebrating their stories.
Building and sustaining communities - whether it’s the pubic you serve or your fellow advocate - isn’t a one-time effort. It’s a year-round commitment.
