From walking through Times Square and hopping on the number 7 subway at 4 a.m. to Citi Field, waiting in line with 10,000 new smiling friends to catch the Huffington Post buses (the amazing Arianna herself showed up and hung out with us in line, made sure everyone was taken care of and hopped on a bus of her own!) to the Rally to Restore Sanity in D.C., the entire experience reeked of civility, camaraderie, pride, and yes sanity. All leading back to that golden word, HOPE!
Some of the organizers took pains to tout the event as non-partisan and they succeeded in containing the rhetoric, but it would be disingenuous to suggest that the crowd, though remarkably amiable and downright delightful was otherwise.
It was all about community, nourishment, rediscovering the civility in conversation, and in the process, hope!
Here are some of the images captured along the way. They tell the story.

Yes, there were people who had opinions, but that does not diminish the fact that the point was to show the world that Americans are capable of having and expression opinions without yelling at each other or resorting to violence or threats. It is important that we have opinions, and that we act on them, whether through voting, circulating petitions or showing up at rallies that support our point of view. However, it would be nice to go to a rally and say something like, “I am pro-choice so that women have the right to have a safe abortion, but I also think that the decision to have an abortion is a very difficult and challenging one, and that the life of the being inside must be considered in making this decision, but I respect that the individual woman will be able to wrestle with the challenging options and come up with a good decision, which is why I am pro-life.” Any rallies like that being planned?
Exactly, Pam! That’s what made this rally so remarkable and truly unique.
