Twitter has rolled out a new feature, labeled “Who to Follow” that helps you find others with similar interests.

The suggestions are based on several factors, including people you follow and the people they follow, making it somewhat useless for those who follow tens of thousands of mostly meaningless, even spammy accounts.

I’d like to think that this  new feature rewards those of us who diligently monitor our accounts, keeping it lean and relevant, following only (or mostly) those who share our interests on a professional and/or personal level.

Twitter: All these features will be available for developers, too. We will be launching an API so third parties can provide these suggestion features in your favorite desktop, mobile, and web applications, too.

But for now, it’s located only on Twitter.com, in the top right of the screen or your “Twitter Information Box” as I like to call it.  Will it drive more people to the website? Probably.  But more importantly, will it start a flurry of account “clean up” to take advantage of this feature?  I’m doubtful, but it may inform the habits of new users.

I’ve already found it useful, but like Facebook’s “People you may know” feature, it may become less so over time.  I do think it’s a positive enhancement, and intrigued to see how it develops and the discussions that are sure to follow.

Another personalized recommendation that based on people we followed and those they followed. :-) Not to mention the familiar ‘Mutual Friends’ feature that is showing up in Twitter web too. Facebook and Twitter are busy taking initiatives from one another.
