An increasing amount of my time is spent online:
- Blogging
- Managing my sites and profiles
- Connecting personally and professionally on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and other social media platforms
- Keeping current with news and information
- Searching and researching
- Entertainment such as discovering and listening to music and watching movies and “television” shows
But most of these platforms are limited by privacy issues and subject specific matters. Increasingly, I find myself wanting to share and connect more broadly, and certainly without ceding control to another entity.
I advocate for indulging fully in the path or passion in which you choose to engage. These will change and evolve — like the exploding social media platforms represented most prominently by Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. And blogging as the home base, if you will, for these forays.
Getting this domain name was itself a direct result of my social media engagement.
After trying unsuccessfully for years to acquire timbaran.com, I relented since it was taken by someone who remained active. I simply tipped my hat to him and moved on. But, in December, 2009, I weighed in on a conversation that my friend, Ryan, was having on his Facebook page. His friend, Greg, who I was “meeting” for the first time also weighed in. I was intrigued and checked out Greg’s profile and discovered that he blogged from a domain that was his actual name. But domain was .net and not .com. I’m not sure why this hadn’t occurred to me before, but I quickly set out to register timbaran.net only to discover that .com was now available. And here I am. See at left, the Facebook conversation as it unfolded.
As with all online creations, this will be a perpetual work-in-progress as content and design organically materialize. I look forward to the journey and connecting with you along the way.
